Anderson, SC (February 3, 2020) —KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE RED BRICK.

Leadership Anderson Class 36 has publicly announced Mural on Main, a project designed to connect the community through the power of art, by installing a mural in downtown Anderson. This venture comes as a result of the 10-month leadership program’s class participants being charged with selecting and pursuing a project that will yield a positive, everlasting impact on the community.

The mural will be fixated to the west facing wall of Orr Street in downtown Anderson, completely visible to all passersby of Main Street. Commissioned by local artist Herman Keith, Jr., the mural will be produced using a parachute-cloth technique and made up of 5×5 panels, measuring 1,700 square feet when assembled. Keith’s passion and ability creates art that transforms beautiful downtown areas and serves as a landmark of which the community can be proud.

Class members cited research studies by Americans for the Arts that evidence the power of murals and other forms of public art to support economic growth, promote social cohesion and cultural understanding, and encourage attachment and sense of belonging within a community. Combining these kinds of evidence-based results with the City of Anderson’s existing Shock the Block plans, Mural on Main has garnered the attention and support of city officials. The vibrant, intricate design is dedicated largely to denoting landmarks and cultivating historical understanding of Anderson County and the Electric City. Assistant City Manager, Andrew Strickland, voiced the city’s support of this project, “Mural on Main will add depth to the rich public art offerings throughout our community. Leadership Anderson’s vision gives us the opportunity to implement an important project identified in our downtown master plan—Shock This Block. We look forward to partnering with nearby businesses and property owners to supplement this exciting project.”

Leadership Anderson Class 36 requests the support of community members and organizations to bring this project to reality. In addition to financial support, the 5’x5’ square panels will be painted by schools, community partners, and project sponsors. This technique provides the opportunity for individuals and organizations to participate and, quite literally, leave their mark on Downtown Anderson. For additional details, including sponsorship information, visit the project website at www.muralonmain.com. With public support, Mural on Main will be completed by June 2020.

Leadership Anderson, founded in 1984, is a 10-month leadership development program devoted to strengthening and dedicating our community leaders. Over 800 local leaders have graduated from the program and continue their commitment to the growth, development and prosperity of Anderson County.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Officials announced a schedule change today for the 2020 Basspro.com Bassmaster Eastern Open on Lake Hartwell in Anderson, S.C. This three-day event has been moved to Sept. 23-25 to accommodate the Clemson University football schedule, which was released last week.

The Eastern Division points race and the Elite Series berths that go with it will be on the line when anglers launch onto the storied waters of Lake Hartwell in Anderson, S.C. — site of three previous Bassmaster Classics and six major B.A.S.S. events.

“The decision to move dates, while not easy, was made in the best interest of the anglers,” said Neil Paul, Executive Director of Visit Anderson, which is hosting the Basspro.com Bassmaster Eastern Open on Lake Hartwell. “Our commitment is to provide the best experience for the competitors and their families during their time in our community, and this change will allow us to provide that experience.”

While always popular and competitive, the Bassmaster Opens have garnered even deeper interest in 2020 as massive changes in the pro fishing industry have many of sportfishing’s biggest names — like Anderson’s-own Brian Latimer, Scott Martin, Randy Blaukat and Andrew Upshaw — competing in all eight Opens this year to try and earn a coveted spot in the Bassmaster Elite Series.

“It’s the most interesting dynamic we’ve ever had for the Opens — and without a doubt, the toughest field we’ve ever had,” said Chris Bowes, tournament director for the Bassmaster Opens. “Maybe the best thing about it is that there’s a young kid out there right now, ready to fish these events. He’s looking at the list, seeing all these big names and he’s not scared one bit. He’s just ready for the challenge.”

In addition to the event payout of $250,400 (based on a field of 150 anglers), anglers in both the pro and nonboater divisions will be competing for Falcon Rods Bassmaster Angler of the Year points. The AOY award comes with a $10,000 prize for the overall points winner in the pro division. The top co-angler will earn entry fees into the 2021 Basspro.com Bassmaster Opens division of his or her choice — a value of approximately $7,200.

Belton, SC.  A once thriving city square, with many unique architectural buildings over 100 years old, sits idle amidst a few business owners who hang on for better days.  Crumbling old dames, with lofty columns and ragged landscaping, wait for a facelift on the streets emanating from the historic square.

A group of passionate citizens is hoping to change all that with a bid for the upcoming HGTV special Home Town Takeover.

“We have classic architecture, a city rich in heritage and culture, and charming people who make this area special,” said newly elected mayor Tiffany Ownbey.  “HGTV can help take our good bones and make us beautiful again.”

A small town with a population of 40,000 or below will be chosen for a special production of Home Town Takeover, hosted by HGTV favorites Ben and Erin Napier.  The hosts will spend about six months helping to renovate historic buildings, public spaces, and architecturally unique homes for a special 6 part series to air in 2021.

Filming for the application will be completed on Monday, with a variety of people with unique stories sharing the reasons Belton is a wonderful city and deserves to be chosen for this whole-town renovation project.

“Restoring and revitalizing our downtown area would be a catalyst for businesses to locate in Belton and for people to move here, giving us an opportunity to share the home town atmosphere that we love with others,” said Belton Alliance Treasurer Rex Maynard.

Anyone who wishes to be a part of the video is invited to be on the city square at 4:30.

“A group shout-out will be filmed, so join us on the square Monday and be a part of the process!” said Alison Darby, Belton Area Museum Association Educational Coordinator.

As of last week, 1600 submissions across America were vying for the opportunity to be chosen for the makeover by the deadline of Feb. 7, 2020.

“We hope HGTV will see the value in coming here to help us get our beat back,” said Maynard, referring to the town’s new motto, “Belton:  A historic heart, with a new beat.”

“It’s certainly worth a shot!” exclaimed council person Eleanor Dorn.
