Second Annual Jackie Seawell Junior Set For Oct. 8-9 At Cobb’s Glen
ANDERSON, S.C. — The second annual Jackie Seawell Junior Golf Tournament will be played Oct. 8-9 at Anderson’s Cobb’s Glen Country Club.
A field of 130 junior players from around the state of South Carolina will participate in the South Carolina Junior Golf Association event. There will be five divisions in the tournament – Boys 12 and Under, Boys 13-15, Boys 16-18, Girls 12 and under, Girls 13-15. The 12 and Under divisions will play nine holes each day. The other three divisions will play 18 holes each day. Winners of each age division will receive the Seawell Belt.
The field for the Seawell Tournament comes from 39 different cities in the state of South Carolina.
The major sponsors of the event are Anderson County and Stringer Oil Company of Anderson.
The tournament benefits the South Carolina Junior Golf Foundation. A SCJGF scholarship honoring Seawell is funded from proceeds from the tournament.
Seawell, a native of Anderson, was the first golf professional at Cobb’s Glen Country Club in Anderson. During his long and successful career, he had a major and lasting impact on junior golf in Anderson and the state of South Carolina. He was dedicated to the game of golf and had a true passion for teaching and growing the game.
Seawell graduated from Anderson’s Boys High School and the University of South Carolina. At Boys High, he served as student body president and was MVP of the football and golf teams. He was a member of Boys High’s 1959 state championship team. At the University of South Carolina, he was a four-year letterman and captain of the golf team. He won the 1964 South Carolina Intercollegiate individual title and led the Gamecocks to the 1964 Atlantic Coast Conference championship.

After leaving Anderson, Seawell was the golf professional at Woodside Plantation in Aiken, director of golf at Sage Valley in Aiken and then became of the owner of Houndslake Country Club in Aiken.
Seawell received numerous awards and recognitions during his career — member of the South Carolina Golf Hall of Fame, member of the T.L. Hanna Athletics Hall of Fame, the Thomas Hitchcock and William C. Whitney Palmetto Golf Club Award, Golf Week Father of the Year Award, the University of South Carolina Department of Athletics Extraordinary Contributions Award, and Honorary Captain of the South Carolina PGA Palmetto Cup team.
Seawell passed away on June 14, 2021. This tournament was created to honor him and his contributions to golf in Anderson, Aiken, and the state of South Carolina.
Seawell’s three sons – Jay, Daniel, and David – all started playing the game at Cobb’s Glen. Jay is the long-time head men’s golf coach at the University of Alabama and has won two national championships with the Crimson Tide. Daniel is owner/head professional at Houndslake Country Club in Aiken and teaches numerous juniors. David spent some time on the PGA Tour and is now in the real estate business in Aiken.
Cobb’s Glen has played host to numerous SCGA events, including South Carolina Amateurs. For many years, the George Cobb design was a regular site for a qualifier for the South Carolina Am.
Cobb’s Glen features generous fairways, large Bermuda greens, and two of South Carolina’s most challenging par-4 holes – the 418-yard ninth hole and the 408-yard 18th hole. No. 9 has a fairway that slopes from right to left. The second shot is uphill to two-tiered green. No. 18 is a dogleg left with a long uphill second shot to a green that has three levels.

ONLY SLIDE MOUNTAIN IN THE UPSTATE WILL OPEN AT DENVER DOWNS FARM THIS WEEKEND
The 250-ft long slide is a highlight of the farm during the fall festival this year
Anderson, SC (September 21, 2022) – Slide Mountain at Denver Downs Farm in Anderson, SC will open on Saturday, September 24th, kicking off their Fall Festival season, which lasts through November 13th. The Mega Super Slide Mountain is the newest attraction at this family favorite farm, which also has placed in the Top 10 corn mazes in the country in the USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice lists for five years.
“Slide Mountain is a fast, fun, and thrilling new experience at Denver Downs Farm and we cannot wait to hear the cries of joys from riders as they fly down the slide!” said Catherine Garrison, Co-Owner of Denver Downs.
The colorful double lane slide is 250 feet long and riders can go up to 35 mph. If guests don’t feel they can take the excitement, they can watch from a viewing bridge atop the slide for an excellent view of the fun. Students at Clemson University assisted in the design of the slide, which also happens to be an excellent teaching device during class field trips this season to the farm.
No other slide like this exists in the Upstate of South Carolina. Kids must be 42” tall to ride the slide.
“Slide Mountain is just the beginning of the excitement at Denver Downs Farm this year,” said Garrison. “We’ve expanded the farm to add about 30 percent more space to our agritourism acres, which means more fun for the whole family.”
In addition to the giant Mega Super Slide Mountain, Denver Downs has added another jumping pillow and set the two pillows into a large enclosed space with shaded seatings for parents. The smaller kids will enjoy a new play area with a climbing wall and slide plus covered sandbox. The zip line, 10-acre corn maze, ropes course, tube slide, farm animals, pig races, barnyard games, hay barn with swinging ropes, human foosball, racing tricycles, and endless cow train are all making comebacks for the 2022 season as well.
The farm opens for its fall season on Saturday, September 24th and continues through November 13th. Weekend themes will include entertainment like the Pumpkin Princess Contest, Rhinestone Cowboy weekend, and Grandparents Day. Live music and bonfires will continue into the fall evenings for those wanting to stretch their day even longer.
“We strive each year to provide more fun and even more memorable experiences for our guests at the farm and we are hoping this year will be the most fun yet with the biggest, most exciting attractions,” said Garrison.

FAMILY-OWNED UPSTATE, SC FARM VOTED 5TH BEST CORN MAZE IN US
Out of more than 500 farms in the country, Denver Downs Farm makes #5 in “10 Best Corn Mazes in U.S.”; Farm opens for its fall season September 24th
Anderson, SC (September 16, 2022) – For the sixth time, Denver Downs Farm, based in Anderson, SC, made the 10Best Readers’ Choice Best Corn Mazes in the country and was voted 5th best. Denver Downs also made the Top 10 list in 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 and was selected again this year, out of over 500 corn mazes in the U.S.
Denver Downs Farm, a family-owned and operated farm since 1869, is the only corn maze in South Carolina and just one of three mazes in the entire Southeast to make the coveted readers choice top 20 selection list.
“As a century family farm, it’s always an honor and thrill to see our hard work be nationally recognized,” said Catherine Garrison, Co-Owner of Denver Downs. “Our farm is not only such a special place for our own family through the Four generations that have lived and worked here but also for the thousands of families we welcome every year who enjoy our farm, all the great activities we offer, and of course, our award-winning corn maze!”
Every year, Denver Downs chooses a theme for the corn maze and this year they are celebrating all things pumpkin and have designed the maze to look like a giant Jack-O-Lantern. While people do love to get lost in the 10-acre maze, Denver Downs is offering a cool tech feature where you can view a map on your phone and using GPS, see where you are and where to find clues to learn about pumpkins.
The farm opens for its fall season on Saturday, September 24th and continues through November 13th.
“If you want to check off a corn maze on your fall bucket list, this is the one to do,” said Catherine Garrison. “We strive each year to provide more fun and even more memorable experiences for our guests at Denver Downs.”
The farm has also been featured in the October 2019 issue of Martha Stewart Living magazine, adding to the many accolades the farm has earned including a “best pumpkin patch” top spot in the state by Reader’s Digest, Good Housekeeping and Southern Living Magazine.
In addition to 10-acre corn maze, farm animals, 35 fun barnyard activities (zipline, haybarn climb/swings, giant slide, human foosball, pig races, ropes course, and gem mining), and live music each weekend, Denver Downs will have over 90 tons of pumpkins this season and feature new activities, the double jumping pillows and Slide Mountain.
