Fishing, Horses, and History – Oh My!

Start off your day in Anderson County with a little fishing, then get to know the historic town of Pendleton!

Begin your journey through Anderson County with your first stop, Green Pond Landing and Event Center. Here on beautiful Lake Hartwell, Anderson County hosts many large and international fishing tournaments. Just to name a few, we’ve hosted the Bassmaster Classic, Bass Nation, Bassmaster Elite Series, American Bass Anglers, The Bass Federation, Major League Fishing, and more. But you don’t have to be a professional angler to enjoy Green Pond Landing: cast your line from shore and see what you can reel in!

Next, journey north to Pendleton. Pendleton has a long and rich history, originally as a part of the Cherokee nation and later as a courthouse seat for the surrounding district following the American Revolution. It was an incredibly influential town thanks to this courthouse, and many wealthy South Carolinians built homes here.

You’ll kick off your time in Pendleton at one of those homes, the Woodburn Historic Home. Built in the 1830s, Woodburn was once the summer home for Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, an affluent Charleston resident. Visit the Moorhead Cabin, the two-room replica slave cabin known as the birthplace of Jane Edna Hunter, a nationally recognized African-American activist and reformer. You can also see the replica Victorian Carriage House while touring the grounds.

Arrive in Downtown Pendleton for a driving tour of the most historic town in Upstate South Carolina! Many locations in Pendleton are on the National Historic Register, so wherever you go you’re sure to see even more history. Once you’ve had your fill of history, park right in the middle of Downtown Pendleton’s historic district to enjoy lunch and some shopping. There are plenty of delectable restaurants and one-of-a-kind boutiques right there in the town square!

After lunch, drive a short ways up the road to T. Ed Garrison Arena. Owned and operated by Clemson University as part of the Agricultural program, you never know what will be going on at the Arena! Ask for a tour of the cattle barn, show arena, and new expo center, where they have horse shows, cattle auctions, dog shows, rodeos and so much more. If you visit at the right time of year, you might even be able to see a medieval-style dueling competition at the Arena.

Reward yourself for a busy day of sightseeing with a dinner from The Blue Heron, back in Downtown Pendleton. Sushi, steak, and fresh seafood are on the menu at this unique venue with mouth-watering food. Their offerings are all locally sourced and its owner is a native resident of Central, SC – just minutes across our border into Pickens County.

We hope your belly and your brain are both full after this exciting day around Anderson County and the beautiful town of Pendleton!
